A Brief History of Albania

Albania has a long and fascinating history shaped by ancient civilisations, powerful empires and a strong national identity. From Illyrian tribes to modern independence, the country’s story reflects resilience, culture and centuries of change. Below is a VERY brief history of Albania but there is so much more to learn!

Illyrian Era

Ancient Illyrian Tribes

The earliest known inhabitants of the region were the Illyrians, an ancient group of tribes that lived throughout the western Balkans. They developed settlements, trade networks and a distinct cultural identity along the Adriatic coast.

168 BC

Roman Rule

After the Illyrian Wars, the region became part of the Roman Empire. Roads, cities and infrastructure were developed, many of which influenced the foundations of modern Albanian towns.

1385

Ottoman Empire

Albania became part of the Ottoman Empire, which ruled the region for more than four centuries. This period left a lasting influence on architecture, cuisine and cultural traditions.

1443

Skenderbeg’s Resistance

National hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg led a rebellion against Ottoman rule, uniting Albanian territories and defending them for more than two decades.

1912

Independence

Albania declared independence from the Ottoman Empire in November 1912, marking the birth of the modern Albanian state.

1944 – 1991

Communist Period

After World War II, Albania became a communist state under Enver Hoxha. The country remained largely isolated from the rest of the world during this time.

1991

Modern Albania

Communism ended in 1991, opening Albania to democracy, international travel and rapid development. Today the country is known for its dramatic landscapes, historic cities and welcoming culture.
